Influenza is a contagious respiratory disease caused by the influenza virus. It is different from the common cold in that its symptoms are more severe and can cause life-threatening complications, especially in young children, the elderly, and people with underlying medical conditions.

Treatment of influenza • Get enough rest, drink plenty of fluids • Reduce fever with paracetamol, avoid aspirin in children • If you have severe influenza or are at risk, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication (Oseltamivir), which works best if started within the first 48 hours of symptoms.

How to prevent influenza • Get a flu shot every year, especially for those at risk • Avoid close contact with sick people • Wear a mask in crowded places • Wash your hands regularly • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unclean hands
